Evan Edgar speaks and moderates at WasteExpo 2015

Highlighting technology to assist in diverting organics from landfill Evan Edgar, CEO of Organic Waste Solutions, spoke at the 2015 WasteExpo in Las Vegas. WasteExpo is one of the Nation’s largest conventions highlighting technology and the current national pulse on all things related to waste. Organics took the center stage where Mr. Edgar focused on innovative strategies which use technology to process materials, creating carbon negative biogas which can be used to fuel trucks and go beyond traditional low carbon fuel strategies. “Our goals are changing” says Edgar. “We are no longer trying to simply take materials out of a landfill, but instead figuring out how they can be integral in helping California meet its Greenhouse Gas Goals.”

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. -- March 25, 2014

Cool Planet Energy Systems, a developer of solutions for the energy, food and water industries with drop-in fuels and advanced CoolTerra™ biochar products, announced today the signing of a Memo of Understanding with Organic Waste Solutions, LLC (“OWS”). Organic Waste Solutions (OWS) is engaged in the design and construction of low impact solutions to address water pollution from storm water runoff, and for water treatment and environmental remediation, serving both private and government clients.

Cool Planet and OWS will cooperate in developing proprietary biochar-enabled technologies to address the need for secondary wastewater treatment, water remediation, and the management of storm water runoff. The companies will work to set up and operate laboratory and field demonstrations, optimize and document the benefits of Cool Planet’s proprietary biochar product in ecological bioremediation, and provide designs for optimal delivery systems. The parties will jointly evaluate the results of the experimental program at the completion of the studies and enter into definitive agreements to commercialize the technology subject to success.

“We are incredibly excited to work with Cool Planet and integrate their proprietary biochar product into our ecological wastewater treatment systems. Having this vital tool will increase the effectiveness of our systems exponentially, even with just the known benefits of biochar today. What excites us the most about the collaboration with Cool Planet is the strong potential for biochar to be extremely effective in the treatment of contaminants. The capacity to manage water contaminants of concern in California, and even more so globally, will be a game changer in water management,” said Jonathan Todd of OWS.

According to Rick Wilson, who leads Cool Planet’s biochar business, “The OWS team is well known in low-impact water remediation. They have designed and deployed water remediation solutions across the United States and around the globe, including projects in China. In commercial deployment, Cool Planet’s technology solutions will span water pollution, low-carbon liquid fuels, increased food capacity, and address drought and climate change in a very practical manner.”

About Cool Planet

Cool Planet is commercializing a technology to create green fuels and biochar in a way that can change the world for good. Our green fuels are chemically identical to fossil fuels, and our “CoolTerra™” biochar product enables fertilizer reduction and increased water retention for increased crop productivity, and more robust plant health. The process is capable of being carbon negative, reversing the consequences of CO[2] build-up from fossil fuels. Cool Planet’s technology has a broad portfolio of pending and granted patents. Global investors include BP, Google Ventures, Energy Technology Ventures (GE, ConocoPhillips, NRG Energy), and the Constellation division of Exelon.

Organic Waste Solutions Names Evan Edgar CEO

Sacramento, Calif. (January 15, 2014)—Evan Edgar has been named CEO of Organic Waste Solutions (OWS), a newly formed, Sacramento, California-based sustainability consulting firm that focuses on managing organic waste with innovative, closed loop technologies and sustainable problem

“Our core business at OWS is helping companies profitably manage their organic waste. California regulations dictate the dramatic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and beyond. Governor Brown’s budget proposes to invest $30 million of the Cap and Trade auction proceeds into clean composting and organic waste-to-energy projects and $200 million for low carbon transportation. We believe these incentives will create a strong demand for firms such as OWS with the expertise to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by diverting organic materials away from landfills through the conversion of food waste and green waste into compost and carbon negative fuel,” says Edgar.

“We launched OWS to develop community-scale carbon neutral resource recovery facilities that integrate clean technologies and organic feedstocks,” says Edgar. “These biomass and anaerobic digestion sites will accept local, organic waste and then process it into renewable energy, carbon negative fuel and clean compost—all while reducing GHG emissions. We believe these smaller scale facilities are less intrusive facilities and are the future to manage waste resources locally.”

Edgar has 30 years of experience in all aspects of solid waste management as principal of Edgar & Associates, Inc., an environmental engineering firm. He has advocated for green energy incentives, compost market development and greenhouse gas reduction policies before legislative committees, regulatory agencies and local commissions on issues involving the collection, hauling, processing and composting of urban green and yard waste and food waste. He has advised private industry, state and local governments and non-governmental organizations on recycling and organic waste project development matters.

Edgar served as the Director of Regulatory Affairs for the California Refuse Recycling Council (CRRC), a California non-profit trade association representing the interests of over 100 solid waste management companies involved in collecting, hauling, processing, recycling, composting and landfilling organic waste. Edgar co-founded the California Compost Quality Council and the California Compost Coalition.

OWS clients include CoolPlanet Biofuels, Phoenix Biomass Energy Inc. and BioCNG.

Cool Planet Biofuels Engages OWS for Biochar Product Development

We are excited to announce that the OWS team has been engaged by Cool Planet to begin market research and early-stage product development for their premium biochar.

Cool Planet has developed a patented process that converts non-food biomass into gasoline through mechanical and chemical processes. The process, known as the carbon negative fuel cycle, creates drop-in gasoline that can be used in any vehicle on the road today.

A valuable material byproduct of Cool Planet's process is a solid, inert carbon, known as biochar. Biochar has many potential uses; from soil conditioning, to filtering, to silage, to remediation and beyond. Sequestering biochar has many benefits for soil and agriculture and permanently removes carbon from the atmosphere, which makes the Cool Planet process carbon negative.

OWS is currently assisting Cool Planet in researching the many product applications of biochar, in researching the current biochar market, and in early-stage biochar product development.
